Position

 

Payroll & Benefits Specialist 

 

 

Location and Reporting Structure 


Reporting to the Superintendent, Compensation & Benefits, this position will be based in the Edmonton Office, AB.

 

 

Responsibilities 

 

• Process end-to-end payroll, including data entry, imports, retroactive adjustments, gross-up calculations, and verification of deductions (taxes, garnishments, benefits);
• Prepare and verify statements of earnings and deductions, ensuring all payroll-related payments (regular, bonuses, vacation pay) are accurate and timely;
• Administer employee benefits programs such as Extended Health, Dental, Life Insurance, LTD, AD&D, RRSP, TFSA, Virtual Care, and EFAP; 
• Prepare and file all statutory and regulatory documents including T4s, ROEs, year-end reports, and benefits reconciliations, ensuring compliance with applicable laws; 
• Maintain audit-ready payroll files (digital and physical), support internal and external audits, and ensure data retention policies are followed; 
• Liaise with Time & Attendance teams to ensure the accuracy of work schedules, job codes, and absenteeism records for payroll input; 
• Reconcile payroll and benefits accounts, identify discrepancies, and collaborate with internal teams and external providers to resolve outstanding issues; and
• Communicate payroll and benefit details to employees, assisting with inquiries and guiding them through complex benefit-related concerns.

 

 

Desired Competencies and Requirements 


• Five (5) years of experience performing benefit administration and full cycle payroll data functions, preferably in heavy industry or mining;
• A two (2) year post-secondary Diploma in Business Administration or Accounting;
• Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) designation; 
• Organizational aptitude, strong prioritization capabilities and demonstrated proficiencies in detailed review; and
• Proficiency in time & attendance systems and payroll software (e.g., SAP, Avanti, or equivalent).
