General Manager, Back River
Location and Reporting Structure
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Operations & COO, this position will be based at the Back River site, Canada.
Responsibilities
- Manage all mine-based functions through the Operations Managers, Heads of Departments, Specialist Professionals, Contractors and Sub-contractors;
- Oversee the Marine Laydown Area (MLA) functions; through the Director, including Winter Ice Road (WIR) construction, operations and transportation of goods and materials. MLA activities will also include oversight of the Sealift operations; including maritime security and fuel offloads. Both activities require a key focus on contractor relationships, whilst maintaining performance standards;
- Direct people, financial, and equipment resources effectively to achieve operational objectives within budgetary constraints;
- Support policies, programs and initiatives related, not only to minimum compliance, but to the spirit and intent of our Inuit Impact Benefits Agreement (IIBA), and effectively engage and liaise with all stakeholders;
- Develop and execute strategic plans, in collaboration with the SVP & COO or their designate, optimize production efficiency, minimize costs, and maximize profitability in alignment with B2Gold Nunavut’s goals;
- Monitor production activities to meet or exceed production targets and quality standards;
- Lead a strong safety culture throughout the operation by implementing and enforcing safety programs, policies and practices;
- Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to safeguard personnel, assets, and reputation; and
- Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and permits. Implement strategies to minimize the environmental and ecological impact of mining operations and champion sustainable mining practices and initiatives to promote responsible resource management
Desired Competencies and Requirements
- Twenty (20) years in progressively responsible leadership roles within the mining industry, with a minimum of five (5) years in an operations managerial capacity, supervising Department Heads, in a remote mining FIFO environment. Experience with marine shipping as well as the construction, maintenance and transportation on ice roads;
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s level preferred) in mine engineering, geology, business administration, or logistics;
- A current professional qualification related to vocational background e.g.) P.Eng, P.Geo, P. Log, PMP, or related designation;
- Demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire teams to build and maintain a results- orientated culture.
- Proven experience working with Indigenous Impact Benefits Agreements, preferably in the Canadian Arctic.
