Position

 

Geotechnical Specialist, Nunavut

 

 

Location and Reporting Structure 


 Reporting to the Sr. Geotechnical Engineer, this position will be a fly in- fly out 3x3 rotation based in Nunavut, Canada.

 

 

Responsibilities 

 

•    Conduct open pit and underground geotechnical investigations, mapping, rock mass characterization, and stability assessments to support safe mine design, ground control, and operational plannng.
•    Perform regular inspections of excavations, highwalls, stockpiles, waste rock storage areas (WSRA), stopes, and underground workings, recommending corrective actions to mitigate geotechnical risks.
•    Monitor ground conditions using radar, prisms, and other geotechnical instrumentation, ensuring accurate data collection, interpretation, reporting, and timely response to stability concerns.
•    Review and respond to Ground Control Logbook entries, investigating ground support and stability issues and implementing or recommending appropriate remedial measures.
•    Oversee the installation, maintenance, and QA/QC of geotechnical monitoring systems and underground corrosion monitoring programs to ensure the integrity of monitoring and ground support infrastructure.
•    Support underground engineering activities by assisting with secondary ground support design, conducting cemented rockfill (CRF) testing and distribution analysis, and providing technical recommendations to optimize mine safety and performance. 

 

 

Desired Competencies and Requirements 

 

•    Five (5) years of geotechnical engineering experience in open pit and/or underground metal mining operations, including geotechnical monitoring, ground control, and mine planning activities. Planning and survey experience is considered an asset.
•    Bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
•    Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration with the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (NAPEG) is preferred.
•    Proficiency with geotechnical analysis and mine planning software, including Deswik, Swedge, Slide, Dips, RS2, and RS3, with the ability to interpret geotechnical data and provide practical operational recommendations. 

 

 

Compensation and Benefits


For informational purposes, the estimated annual earnings are $148,824.00 for 2184 scheduled hours (combined regular hourly rate of $54.00 and overtime rate of $81.00) in a work year.
