Position
Senior Underground Planning Engineer
Introduction
Provide mine engineering to ensure safe, productive, and cost-effective development of the Fekola Underground Mine project, and to develop the mine planning and the underground planning team necessary for successful long-term production.
The Senior Underground Mining Engineer is responsible for providing technical mine engineering and planning support to the underground operation, ensuring optimum ventilation, dewatering, backfilling, scheduling, designs and mining operations that contribute towards achieving production targets, mining efficiency and safety objectives. The Senior Underground Mining Engineer is also responsible for long-term mine planning for the underground mine and delivering production data and reports. The emphasis will be on training and mentoring the underground engineering team and maintaining high standards of work safety and health for him/herself and department.
Location and Reporting Structure
Reporting to the Fekola Underground Project Manager, this position will be an 8/4 fly in-fly out rotation, based at the B2Gold Mali Fekola mine.
Responsibilities
- Manage the underground planning and engineering team and ensure that construction, development, production, safety and quality targets are achieved;
- Oversee mine planning including scheduling, development and stope designs, stope optimisation and underground drill and blast, to ensure efficient and optimal reserve extraction;
- Coordinate, supervise and ensure timely preparation of Short, Medium and Long-Term Planning functions for the underground project;
- Review and signoff of designs, plans and schedules;
- Prepare underground long-term mine plans and schedules;
- Contribute to costings and annual and LOM budgeting;
- Facilitate learning opportunities for and assist with the professional development of the underground planning team and other technical services staff;
- Liaise and coordinate with geology, geotechnical and open-pit departments and contractors to achieve operational objectives;
- Analyse development and production data to identify opportunities for improvement;
- Ensure compliance with all B2Gold Safety, Health and Environmental policies and procedures;
- Maintain constructive and effective working relationships with B2Gold employees, contractors, and consultants;
- Demonstrate strong safety culture and visible felt leadership with your team and other departments; and
- Other duties as set out by the Company.
Competencies and Requirements
- Degree in Mining Engineering (B.Eng. Or B.ASc)
- Minimum of 5 years of combined experience as a mine engineer and/or operations in a mechanised hard-rock underground mine with at least 2 years of supervisory experience in this setting
- Strong knowledge, expertise and understanding of underground mining and techniques including development, long hole open stoping, backfill, ventilation, dewatering, scheduling, etc.
- Experience in underground budgeting and long-range scheduling
- Experience in the development phase of a mine or major project
- Experience supervising mine planning
- Experience supervising production drill and blast engineers for the design of open stopes
- Ability to lead and work within a team environment and possess excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills required
- Valid driver’s license
- Excellent knowledge of mine design software: Deswik Suite
- B2Gold utilizes Deswik for underground mine planning and scheduling
